Women Lawyers Committee

The USF Women Lawyers Committee was founded more than 20 years ago by a group of USF law school graduates who wanted to:

  • Maintain the close ties they formed with other women during law school
  • Provide guidance and support for current law students, through activities such as a Mentor Program for USF JD students.
  • Establish a full-tuition Scholarship for Transitional Students to help them make the transition from another career to law school. (A "Transitional Student" is a first-year law student, with a five-year break in his or her education, i.e., has been out of school at least five years between college and law school.)

Scholarship for Transitional Students

Since 1987, the Committee has awarded a partial tuition Scholarship for Transitional Students. Alumni recipients have included: Mary Jan Delisi Lofthouse '87, Patricia Simmons '91, Lyn Harlan '93, Cynthia Levin '98, Diane Webb '98, Kristin Lamson '99, Shannon Thorne '01, Jie Zhou '01, Diana Carabajal-Strait '02, Kate Flick '04, LaRon (Doty) Hogg-Haught '04, Jennifer Lynch, Boalt '05, Charlotte Westfall '06, Stanley Radtke '07, Brenda Balzon '08, Michell Nunez '09, Nicole Knudsen '10 and Sheila Husting '11.

The Scholarship for Transitional Students is based on a portion of the interest generated by its endowed funds. The bulk of the interest is dedicated to the Scholarship fund. The endowment is ONLY used for scholarships, not for fundraising or programs.

In 2007, the Committee awarded a $4,000 Scholarship, which can make a difference to a Transitional Student, but is only 11% of USF's current annual tuition (approximately $35,900). We need to continue to fill the Scholarship coffers. The Committee would appreciate your generous contributions to the USF Women Lawyers Committee's Scholarship for Transitional Students. Tax deductible donations to the "Scholarship for Transitional Students" can be sent to:

WLC/WLA JD Mentor Program

The Committee, in partnership with USF School of Law, has developed a JD Mentor Program for students who are members of the USF Women's Law Association. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a Mentor to a current JD student, please refer to our Guidelines for Mentors. If you are ready to sign up to become a Mentor, please complete the WLC/WLA JD Mentor Profile Form below.

Annual Panel, Scholarship Fundraiser and Reception

Each spring, the Committee hosts a CLE panel and fundraiser at the Academy of Art University to provide a forum for discussion and to serve as a means of raising funds for the Scholarship fund. This year's Spring Panel and Fundraiser Reception will be held on the evening of Thursday, March 19, 2009 and the them is "Managing Your Career in a Challenging and Rapidly Changing Economy: A Panel Discussion Moderated by USF School of Law Dean Jeffrey S. Brand." To RSVP or for additional information, please contact Anita Ayers with the Office of Development and Alumni Relations at lawdevelopment@usfca.edu.
