Message from the Dean
The University of San Francisco School of Law is proud to be the home of the J. Thomas McCarthy Institute for Intellectual Property and Technology Law. For decades, USF Professor Tom McCarthy has been a pioneer, shaping and defining Intellectual Property law. He has done this as a prolific writer, skilled lawyer, and revered teacher. His treatises line the shelves of virtually everyone practicing or teaching in the area. It is no accident that our Institute bears his name and that he is the Founding Director. USF is proud to be home to Professor McCarthy's ground breaking work. The creation of the Institute was the natural culmination of his efforts.
The McCarthy Institute marks USF's continuing commitment to support research, practice and teaching in Intellectual Property and related fields. That effort is led by Professor McCarthy along with Executive Director, Professor David Franklyn and Professor Susan Freiwald, the Institute's Director of Cyberlaw Programs. The McCarthy Institute is dedicated to sustaining Professor McCarthy's legacy and continuing to help define the law that is permeating every aspect of our society.
