Scholarships
There are a number of supplemental scholarships available to help USF students pay for their legal education. These financial aid options are provided by a number of sources, including the law school itself, the University of San Francisco, the U.S. government, and private organizations and agencies.
Merit Scholarships
The USF School of Law awards merit scholarships to selected students entering their first year of study based on their pre-law school academic achievement and demonstrated potential for success in legal studies. All applicants are considered for merit scholarships, which are granted after a review of the application materials. No additional financial aid or other forms are required. Successful applicants are notified of any scholarship award with their offer of admission.
Paul Archbold Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship, established by the family of Class of 1948 Paul I. Archbold, is awarded
to a law student whose undergraduate degree was earned at USF.
Bardt Law Scholarship Endowment
A bequest from Harry M. Bardt, Class of 1927, provides scholarship assistance
to deserving Class of students.
Arthur J. Barrett Scholarship
The Arthur J. Barrett Scholarship benefits a worthy law student in financial need.
Bay Area Minority Scholarship
Scholarship for minority students funded by donations from prominent San Francisco Bay Area
law firms interested in promoting rich racial diversity in the law profession.
The scholarship donations are administrated by the Bar Association of San Francisco.
Kathleen M. and A. Russell Berti
A scholarship honoring A. Russell Berti, Class of 1928, who was associated
with the law school for more than 50 years and served as acting dean of the law school three times.
Leon A. and Esther F. Blum Foundation Scholarship
Scholarship funds donated by the Leon A. and Esther F. Blum Foundation aid
worthy students in the pursuit of their legal education at USF.
Donald R. Brophy Scholarship
A scholarship established by the law firm of Hanna, Brophy, MacLean, McAleer
and Jensen in honor of their late senior partner, Donald R. Brophy, Class of
1928. Special preference is given to a part-time student with demonstrated need
who entered law school after lengthy experience in another field.
Eugene Clifford Scholarship
A scholarship for law students funded by donations in honor of Eugene Clifford,
Class of 1946.
Bruce J. Diaso Memorial Fund
A scholarship fund established by classmates in memory of Bruce J. Diaso,
Class of 1966. Mr. Diaso was afflicted with polio at the age of 15 and used a
wheelchair during his cum laude career as a USF undergraduate as well as during
his law school years. After graduation, Mr. Diaso served in the Fresno County
District Attorney's Office.
Joseph Farry Scholarship
A scholarship established through a gift from the Hon. John Molinari, Class of
1933, in honor of his mentor, the distinguished San Francisco lawyer Joseph
Farry.
Judge Timothy I. Fitzpatrick Scholarship
A scholarship fund established by friends and colleagues in memory of Hon.
Timothy I. Fitzpatrick, Class of 1893. The fund assists worthy law students as a
tribute to Fitzpatrick's lifelong devotion to the administration of justice
and ideals of the legal profession.
John A. Flynn Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship fund, established by friends and colleagues of maritime attorney
John A. Flynn, to assist a student with an interest in maritime law. Before
his death, John Flynn was a teacher and mentor to many law students and lawyers
who went on to practice maritime law.
Conrad J. Greider Law Scholarship
A scholarship for deserving law students established by a bequest from Conrad
J. Greider, a San Francisco industrialist and philanthropist and friend of the
law school.
Arthur and Catherine Healy Scholarship
A scholarship fund established in memory of Arthur Healy, Class of 1920, by a
bequest from the estate of his widow, Catherine Healy.
George Helmer Fund
A scholarship fund established to assist students in financial need by George
Helmer, Class of 1940. Helmer was the first president of the USF School of Law Board of Counselors.
Wilhilmine Klosowski Scholarship Fund
A scholarship fund for law students provided by a bequest from Wilhilmine Klosowski,
a friend of the law school.
Charles R. Lawrence III Scholarship
A scholarship established to honor Charles R. Lawrence, a former law professor
at USF. The scholarship is awarded to students of academic achievement and leadership
ability who are committed to applying their legal skills for the public good.
Albert and Mae Lee Memorial Fund
A scholarship for deserving law students in need provided by a bequest from the
estate of Albert and Mae Lee.
Frank D. Madison Scholarship
A scholarship fund established in honor of Frank D. Madison by a gift from the
Madison Fund and Marshall P. Madison, a founding partner of Pillsbury, Madison
and Sutro.
Florence A. McAuliffe Scholarship
A scholarship fund honoring Florence A. McAuliffe, Class of 1905, a founding partner
of Heller, Ehrman, White and McAuliffe, for whom the law school's McAuliffe
Honor Society is named.
Alexis J. Perillat Memorial Scholarship
The scholarship, awarded each year to a law student with financial need, was established in honor of Alexis J. Perillat (Class of 1951), a gifted
and well known San Francisco Bay Area litigator. The scholarship was established by his widow, Gloria Perillat, with assistance
from friends and colleagues.
Edelbert W. Pieruccini Scholarship
A scholarship fund for deserving law students donated in honor of Edelbert W.
Pieruccini, Class of 1923.
Michael Raddie Scholarship
Established by Michael Raddie, Class of 1960, to assist a USF School of Business
undergraduate who excels in the field of accounting, business, and finance and
who chooses to continue his or her education at the USF School of Law.
Rauenhorst Law Scholarship Fund
A scholarship for students with financial need funded by a gift from Joseph
J. Rauenhorst, Class of 1981, through the Gerald Rauenhorst Family foundation.
Andrew C. Schwartz Scholarship Fund
Founded by William Schwartz and his son, Andrew C. Schwartz, Class of 1975, to enable a student with an interest in civil rights to study law.
James Duane/Stahl Scholarship
A scholarship established by Gladys Stahl in memory of her nephew James Duane,
Class of 1943.
USF Scholarships
Generous donations from alumni help fund USF scholarships. Students must meet specific criteria established by the donors. The recipients are typically selected by an alumni or donor committee.
Daniel J. Curtin, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is in memory of Daniel Curtin, Jr. '57, who was an internationally known land use practitioner, former city attorney, and teacher and mentor to countless land use attorneys and planners. Mr. Curtin's family, friends and colleagues have established this fund to support a scholarship or summer stipend for a student in an unpaid or low paid position at a law firm, government agency, or non-public agency working in land use or municipal law. John Flynn Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is in memory of John Flynn, who was an alumnus of Stanford and a distinguished member of the San Francisco Maritime Bar. The scholarship will be awarded to a USF School of Law student with an interest in maritime law. Click here for the 2009-10 application.
Daniel Levine Cook Scholarship
Scholarship was established by a grant from the Daniel Levine Cook Fund of the Jewish Community
Endowment Fund, upon recommendation of David, Phyllis, and Anne Cook, in loving
memory of Daniel Cook, Class of 1992. This scholarship is for a Jewish law student

Douglas M. Raskin Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship established by classmates and friends of Douglas Michael Raskin,
Class of 1987, who died in 1994 at the age of 33 while climbing Mount Fuji in
Japan. The scholarship is awarded to a third or fourth year student who exemplifies
the spirit of adventure, sense of humor, love of life, and caring for others

Saber Es Poder Scholarship
This scholarship fund was created by La Compania, the University's
Latino/Hispanic Alumni Society, to promote diversity. The scholarship is awarded annually to a Latino/Hispanic
student on the basis of need, academic achievement, and service to the community.
John Scully Memorial Trust
This scholarship was established in memory of John C. Scully, Class of 1991, who was
killed in a mass shooting at 101 California Street on July 1, 1993, shielding
his wife from gunfire. The scholarship, available to second- or third-year law students dedicated to the betterment of the marine environment, was created by John Scully's classmates;
his wife, Michelle Scully Hobus, Class of 1992; and his parents, Dr. and Mrs.

Agnes O'Brien Smith Scholarship
Established by Dr. Philip Smith in honor of his mother, the Agnes O'Brien Smith Scholarship Agnes is awarded to second- and third-year law students based on
financial need, academic scholarship, leadership, and community service.
O'Brien Smith, Class of 1941, was an admired jurist and lawyer and the
first woman named to the American Board of Trial Advocates. O'Brien Smith also served as
president of the Queen's Bench, which administers the

Women Lawyers Council Scholarship
The Women Lawyers Council awards this scholarship to an entering transitional student who has
been out of school for a continuous five-year period prior. Information about the scholarship and how to apply is
sent to entering students when available.
Arthur C. Zief Jr. Scholarship Program
Multiple scholarships for deserving, needy law students, established by Arthur
C. Zief Sr., Class of 1947, in honor of his son, Arthur C. Zief Jr. These scholarships
are awarded to continuing students who make significant extra-curricular contributions

Herbert C. Jensen Scholarship
An award designated to assist a needy law student who is also a veteran of U.S. military service abroad. Established by the law firm of Hanna, Brophy, MacLean, McAleer and Jensen, it is named in honor of Herbert C. Jensen, Class of 1949, who served as an Air Force pilot during World War II. Diane Yu Loan Repayment Assistance Program
A program started in 2004 to assist recent law graduates who are working for Asian Pacific American legal service organizations repay a portion of their student loans. The recipient of this award receives $5,000 for two years to be applied to their educational debt.

Harry A. Blackmun Scholarship
The Harry A. Blackmun Scholarship was established in honor of Hon. Harry A. Blackmun, retired associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, as a perpetual testament to his contribution to American jurisprudence, to his compassion and generosity of spirit, and to the inspiration he has provided by example and personal encouragement. The recipient will be chosen based on several factors including academic achievement, financial need, and potential for making a contribution to society and the legal profession. Applicants must be seniors or graduates applying to law school. In addition, preference will be given to applicants with a significant tie to the Blackmun's home state of Minnesota.

The Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Scholarship
An award in the memory of Giles S. Rich, circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, will be given by the Federal Circuit Bar Association to a law student demonstrating financial need and academic promise, either in undergraduate studies or law school. Selection for the award will be based on a written submission of no more than one page setting out the applicant's financial need, interests in the study of law, and qualifications for the award considered relevant by the applicant.

The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans
The purpose of The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans is to provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished new Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. The program is established in recognition of the contributions new Americans have made to American life and in gratitude for the opportunities the United States has afforded donors and their family. Applicants must be a new American, have a bachelor's degree, and be older than 30 years of age as of November 1, 2004.

Loan funds are designed to help Jewish men and women who have difficulty pursuing higher education. Students must be pursuing a degree at an accredited institution. Scholarships for Mexican-American, Hispanic, and Latino Students
Saber Es Poder Scholarship
The Saber Es Poder Scholarship (Knowledge is Power) was established by Rev. Luis Quihuis, SJ in 1995 to provide scholarships for Latinos at USF. The USF Hispanic Alumni Association, La Compania, as well as the Office of Development are the primary supporters of this scholarship program.

College Scholarship Program
Scholarships are available on a competitive basis for graduate students that are of Hispanic heritage. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens or legal permanent residents, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, have earned at least 12 undergraduate units in the U.S. or Puerto Rico, and be enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program at an accredited-U.S. college or university.

Esperanza Scholarship

This scholarship offers financial assistance to qualified Latino individuals in pursuit of higher education. The Abe and Esther Hagiwara Student Aid Award was founded to provide financial assistance to a student who otherwise would have to delay or terminate his or her education due to a lack of financing. Sho Sato Memorial Scholarship
Sho Sato, a professor of law at the University of California, Berkeley, was one of the nation's most prominent scholars of local governmental law. Sato was known as a leading figure in promoting relations between law schools in Japan and the United States. Every applicant must be a National JACL member. The Allen E. Broussard Scholarship Foundation
The Allen E. Broussard Scholarship Foundation (AEBSF) is offering three $5,000 scholarships to minority law students attending San Francisco Bay Area law schools. ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund
The applicant must be an entering, first-year law student at an ABA-accredited law school. At the time of submission of the application, the applicant must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.5 at the undergraduate level. Earl Warren Shearman & Sterling Scholarships are two special stipends for African-American law students.
